Between June 30th and July 13th, the ‘Global Humanities Institute 2024: Design Justice AI will take place at the University of Pretoria in Pretoria, South Africa.

The event is organised by Critical AI @Rutgets together with Rutgers Center for Cultural Analysis, the Center for Advancement of Scholarship at the University of Pretoria, the Humanities Research Centre at ANU, and the Humanities Institute at the University of Connecticut.

The Generative AI Institute will investigate community-centred, humanistic, and interdisciplinary approaches to "Generative AI" (the statistical modelling of human languages, communication, arts, and cultures). It is a collaborative effort involving four university-based centres:

- The Rutgers Center for Cultural Analysis
- The Center for Advancement of Scholarship at the University of Pretoria
- The Humanities Research Centre at Australian National University
- The Humanities Institute at the University of Connecticut

The event focuses on the widespread adoption of generative AI technologies, which mimic human languages, communication, arts, and cultures using large-scale internet data. Inspired by the Design Justice Network, the Global Humanities Institute aims to integrate interdisciplinary critique, public humanities, and best practices from data science and digital humanities. It seeks to foster creative research, promote inclusive machine learning systems, and disseminate resources such as blogs, research templates, and peer-reviewed articles to advance understanding and engagement with generative AI. The institute aims to support campuses in developing pedagogical strategies and community-centred research projects aligned with principles of design justice.
